Upon my acquisition of a Thoroughbred colt I named Wildfire, I did research into nutrition as I have also done for my dogs. I wanted to give my horse the best chance at a healthy life not only from the outside but the inside too. Through extensive research I found a good local source for hay, a high quality pellet feed that doesn't have oats, corn, soy, or molasses-- the things I didn’t want to feed my horse because products having ingredients like corn that can be contaminated with Aflatoxin which infects corn plants, or oats that aren't good for a multitude of reasons one being they can cause colic due to levels of starch that can’t be absorbed, and molasses which can cause laminitis, weight gain and dental issues. When I first got Wildfire he was quite shabby looking ( he had previously been fed mass amount of oats) but my property had enough grass at the time for him to graze that would give him some of the nutrition he needed. I looked to see if there were any horse supplements out there that had all the things I was looking for but without the things I didn't want Wildfire to have, but I couldn’t find anything. Some top known brands even had things that are toxic for horses!! I did research on natural herbs and put together a mixture of 8 "super-foods" that contain a healthy source of carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and provide a cool energy without the starch and sugar. Each one complements the other and balances what another might be lacking. I decided I would create my own mix, and for the past few years I have put this mixture to the test on Wildfire and have been pleased with the results… and he loves it!!
During the Winters Wildfire's Remedy has been an extremely beneficial addition to his feedings, especially in the freezing cold weather. The first Winter I had with him he didn't drink as much as he should, my fear was that he would colic. The beginning mixture of what is now Wildfire's Remedy, Coconut meal and Turmeric, got him to drink. I would mix it in the water bucket he had and he would drink it all. When soaked with hot water and made into a thick paste or porridge like texture, it helped warm Wildfire from the inside and provided extra fat and calories. In the summer I mix it with the hot water making it into a paste and then let it cool down. Once cooled and a little extra cold water added it becomes a cool summer treat that helped to keep him hydrated.
For those that travel with their horses to shows, a daily rationing can be put into zip lock bags and then just add the right amount of water, zip the bag closed, mush it up into a thick paste, and it is ready to feed. The coconut in it is a cool protein to give energy and a few of the ingredients such as the Chia and Fenugreek help with hydration as well as providing energy and the Ashwagandha helps reduce anxiety from environmental stress. It is also beneficial to bring pre-mixed portions for long trail rides when there might not be grass for the horse to graze or limited water. A scoop of the Endurance formula can be added to it for additional support.
I have done the research, found the right ratio of mixture, tested it on Wildfire, and have been feeding the mixture to him daily since early 2021. After hearing of some people’s issues with their horse’s health ( mostly related to poor food quality) I then decided to put Wildfire’s Remedy together for others to feed to their horses.
