Digestion Remedy
The Digestion tract is a very complex and important functioning system of the horse. Digestion begins when food enters the mouth and the horse starts to chew while mixing food with saliva, this starts the process of digestion. Horses can produce 9 to 10 gallons of saliva per day!!! That is almost as much as they need to drink of water in a day. Saliva helps soften the food so a bolus can be created to make it easier to swallow. Saliva also aids in control of pH levels. Once swallowed the bolus of food moves down the esophagus and into the stomach. The stomach of the horse is the smallest unit of the digestive tract. The stomach mixes, stores, and controls the release of feed as it secretes pepsin to begin protein digestion in the small intestine. After a meal, the

food moves through the small intestines to the cecum. Volume of food consumed and rate of passage can affect digestion and absorption of nutrients. That is why it is more beneficial for a horse to be fed smaller meals spaced out through out the day especially if they aren't able to be out grazing. In the small intestine a majority of non-structural carbohydrate, protein, and fat is digested by enzymes and absorbed. The digestion of oils and protein is substantial in the small intestine. The digestion of starch can often be incomplete due to the starch in cereal grains such as oats and corn. If starch is not digested in the small intestine it will pass on to the hind gut. Because of the acidic nature of these products during fermentation, the pH in the hind gut will drop and perpetuate non-beneficial bacterial growth. This leads to serious diseases such as, laminitis, colic, endotoxemia and metabolic acidosis. This is one of the many reasons I had searched for a feed that doesn't contain oats, corn, or soy. Wildfire's Digestion Remedy has Bee Pollen which feeds Bifidobacteria a good bacteria and has provided beneficial effects in restoring a healthy gut providing a significant break down of food into usable nutrition and energy. The Sunflower Lecithin and Apple Pectin provide a synergistic approach to avoiding ulcers especially during stressful times. Pectin is a water-soluble fiber that combined with lecithin forms a hydrophobic barrier on the gastric mucosal membranes, protecting them against the harsh effects of stomach acid. Usually omeprazole is mentioned when talking about healing gut related issues. It isn't good for long term as it can eliminates too much stomach acid that is needed to break down protein during digestion. Depleting too much stomach acid can result in protein shortage causing loss of muscle, depressed immune function, poor digestion, and hormonal imbalances. Stomach acid also protects against harmful microbes that a horse might pick up when grazing or eating off the ground. Ingredients in the Digestion Remedy provides a healthy and effective way to support the fore and hind gut health of your horse.
